A meal plan can mean different things to different people. For some, it’s a set plan of knowing ahead of time what to prepare and eat each day of the week. For others, it’s preparing some ingredients ahead of time to make life easier. To me, meal planning means finding any plan that works and helps get healthy meals on the table.

If healthy eating is on your New Year’s wish list then meal planning, to some extent, is important.
1. Create A List of Tried and True – It is estimated that most families repeat the same 7-10 procedures over and over again. Although it may sound boring to some, it is actually a lifeline to know the 7-10 health procedures that will work well for you and your family. I emphasize health because this is where change needs to happen. I have found “recipe-repetition” creates significant problems for some of my clients. So, does your family love macaroni and cheese? It’s good, but it’s a one-time meal.
You want to find 7-10 healthy recipes for your download, tried and true recipes. Take out a paper right now, either digital or physical and write down 5-10 strategies that you prepare time and time again. This is your jumping off point, your road map to a meal plan. You can use this information as a template to think of flavors and combinations that you and your family will love. If they are not a health practitioner, this is great information to learn about.
2. Stock up on printables – Open a notebook or a digital notebook and write down 5-10 essential items that you always have on your to-do list. Mine looks like this: eggs, potatoes, fruit (it depends on the season), green vegetables (usually one color and another), almond milk, and avocado. I find that when I’m too busy or can’t properly plan meals for the week I can at least get by with my grocery list and then cook from my pantry or freezer for the rest of the week (see tip #3).

3. Take Inventory – Take a few minutes to take a quick inventory of what’s in your fridge, pantry, and freezer. A big obstacle to meal planning is not using things you already have or buying the same things over and over again. I recommend keeping the list in a very visible place on your refrigerator or on your kitchen’s dry erase board. I usually get a detailed list in January and then again in the spring. If this seems like too much work, just take a look and write more notes like, ok I have beans, 3 types of grains, vegetables and poultry and pasta. And I literally had lots and lots of pasta.
This week when I was doing my pantry list I counted 30 pounds. of pasta. That is not an exaggeration. Jordan has a pasta problem, he is officially banned from buying any extra pasta until he is over 30lbs.
4. Deal with your products once you get them home. Shopping doesn’t end when you bring bags to your kitchen, I love it, trust me. Once you bring your food home from the market, the real food preparation begins. Ask for help, if possible, something along the lines of; “Hey baby, can you watch the kids for 30 minutes?” or “Hey babe, will you take the dog outside and leave me alone for 30 minutes ;-)”.
Take that time to organize your material deliveries. Wash and dry the lettuce (I wash my lettuce and leave it in a salad spinner in my fridge), chop some raw vegetables, roast some root vegetables, chop zucchini for a quick salad or meatballs . Stack glass containers of your ingredients in the fridge, take a picture and post it on Instagram. Of course 😉

5. Don’t buy more food than you need – Overeating can set in if you buy too much food. If you open your fridge and see the piles and food items that all need to be cooked or prepared, survival wins. The fault is the side that doesn’t have enough food to begin with. I know this sounds counter-productive, but I think you should take the time to think about how much food you and your family eat.
Over 40% of the food produced/grown in the US is thrown away. That is a devastating calculation. A meal plan is an opportunity to become more lean and conscious of your eating habits leading to less weight loss, better financial health, and better, healthier food to eat!
