If you want to start eating healthier, you obviously need to stock your fridge with healthy foods. It helps to make a list of basic staples that should always be at hand. It takes the guesswork out of grocery shopping, and you’ll feel more prepared during meals and snacks.
My staples include a variety of pre-cut fruits and vegetables, slices of cheese, single-serve yogurts, eggs, and lots of turkey. It is one of the smallest types of meat and is rich in vitamins and minerals. It’s also easy to prepare and super versatile – literally, tons of recipes!
My favorite turkey brand is Honeysuckle White (or its sister brand, Shadibrook Farms). It is growth hormone and antibiotic free and grown by independent family farmers… such a high quality product!

Each category should live in a specific zone (location) and preferably in a closed and visible house (clean production). This allows everything to be accessible, quantifiable and aesthetically pleasing… while maximizing shelf space.

They specifically identify the contents of each container. Not only does it help maintain your system, but it also keeps your kids, your spouse, and anyone else using the space.

Do you feel like you’re constantly throwing away old food that you forgot to eat? One of the easiest ways to reduce food waste (and save money) is to buy less and plan ahead. Because it’s just Andrew and I, our fridge is barely stocked with food. We shop for a week’s worth of supplies (keeping in mind the 3-meal combos). Most of our ingredients can be easily mixed and mixed to create simple stir-fry bowls, salads, snack plates and more.

Overall, we follow the “eat once, eat twice” rule. Andrew takes the leftovers to work the next day and I usually take some leftovers and make a big salad for lunch. Then, we repeat! By the time Thursday rolls around, we’re both usually on a date. When we don’t have guests in town, we aim to eat out only 2-3 times a week. Sit down with yourself or someone you share finances with and get real about your preferences and desired lifestyle to find a weekly grocery shopping flow that works for you.
